Strongly Resisted White Government efforts to herd his people onto a reservation. Discovery of GOLD on Indian land and the ensuing gold rush resulted in the government pushing Indians off their land and onto a reservation. Chief Joseph fought back. The government took most of the land away. Chief Joseph hoped American principles of equality and justice would include the treatment of Indians. He died of a broken heart

Cochise & Apaches....Fierce Warriers
Cochise held a flag of truce and came forward to proclaim his innocence in the abduction of a young white girl. Army officers attempted to arrest him. Cochise pulled his knife, slashed the tent and escaped. For ten years, he and his Apache band fought numerous battles with government forces, resisting efforts to force them onto a reservation.

SITTING BULL...Spiritual Leader of the Lakota Sioux
At war with the government and white settlers...MANY BATTLES. Gold was discovered in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This land was guaranteed to the Indians by the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. White settlers were banned from entering this sacred Indian land. After gold was discovered, large numbers of prospectors entered the Black Hills in violation of the treaty. The Lakota Sioux fought back. The government offered to buy the land from the Indians. The Lakota Sioux resisted. The government ordered the Indians onto reservations. Sitting Bull joined Crazy Horse to defeat General George Armstrong Custer at Little Bighorn. The army relentlessly pursued Sitting Bull and his warriers. In 1881, Sitting Bull surrendered.
